The local host families are all from the upper middle class and they usually live in the greener areas outside the city centre of Santo Domingo. You can either walk to school or go by one of the numerous busses in town. We recommend you eat in one of the many great restaurants Santo Domingo has to offer. Even for vegetarians there is a good choice of restaurants to go to which is not very common in Latin America.

COUNTRY INFO DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The white-sand beaches with palm trees, impressive mountain ranges with spectacular rivers and waterfalls, saltwater lakes full with exotic wildlife and a capital full of culture are what makes the Dominican Republic so popular with travellers. Whether you're looking to travel and see incredible nature, party and dance, relax on the beaches or practice one of the many aquatic sports, the Dominican Republic has it all.

The Dominican Republic is part of the island Hispaniola. Hispaniola is after Cuba the second largest island of the Caribbean. It hosts two countries, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic covers two third of the island. It has more then 9 million inhabitants, 73% of them mulattos, 16% white and 11% black. The hospitality of the Dominicans is well known. Close family ties and good neighborhoud relations are very important. Maybe that is why Dominicans always seem to be on the road and on the move: You will meet them in the street chatting with the neighbour, enjoying a cafecito, laughing with their families and friends in the back of their trucks when going to the beach on Sundays, or heavily gesticulating while playing Domino in the little village pub or in the streets. Dominicans love to dance. Music is always around them, if it is at home, on the bus, in the little colmado (food store) near-by, or on the street. Of all the rhythms that enriched the cultural heritage of the Dominicans, the Merengue is the most collective expression of the people’s soul. As a popular musical form, it is very dynamic and varies from one generation to the next.

Tourism is the major economic factor of the country. Many all-inclusive tourists spend their holidays in the Dominican Republic. In recent years although, due to the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism to support alternative and modern concepts of tourism, more and more individual travellers discover the country on their own.

The main tourist seasons are from December to February, July to August, and Semana Santa (the week before Easter). February and November are perhaps the best months to visit - both have great weather, thinner crowds and allow you to partake in either pro baseball, Carnival or whale-watching.
